Description
Hoof Paste Black Instructions for use
Can be used as a barrier dressing on all parts of the equine hoof.
Hoof Paste Black contains Potassium permanganate (commonly known as Condy’s crystals). For centuries, this has been used successfully to support skin health. At the concentration used in Hoof Paste Black, it is safe to use on horses’ hooves.
Storage: Keep the lid on, store out of direct sunlight in a cool place.
Caution: Do not mix with peroxide or other chemicals. Do not put near a naked flame.
Do not swallow. Avoid eye contact. Keep out of reach of children.
It is safe to handle but will stain your hands, so you may prefer to use gloves.
Do not use on sensitive tissue (i.e. exposed corium).
Directions for use: Hoof cavities, wall separation, resections
Where possible/necessary fully resect the hoof wall around the affected area back to good healthy tissue. This task should be carried out by a professional hoof care practitioner.
- Scrub the affected area daily with hydrogen peroxide cream or liquid (3-6%) using an old toothbrush. Leave on for 2 mins then rinse with 50/50 Methylated spirits and water in a spray bottle. If the area is particularly bad, scrub and rinse a few times to clean more effectively. Do this step before the first 2-5 applications, depending on severity. Cease using hydrogen peroxide scrub when you are satisfied the area is clean and dried out- often showing some cracks on larger areas and the peroxide no longer fizzes or foams.
- Towel dry the area and smear a thin layer of Hoof Paste Black using your finger (gloved if you are worried about a stain).
- If cavities exist in a wet environment, pack with Hoof Paste Black, then plug with greasy wool and tape or bandage on. A hoof boot could even be used in some circumstances (if so, ensure everything is clean and dry before applying the boot).
- Continue to check and clean affected area and apply Hoof Paste Black regularly, every 2-4 days depending on individual case and environment, until the damaged area has grown out.
Handy Hints:
- Keep your horses’ feet as dry and as clean as possible whilst applying Hoof Paste Black to affected areas. Remove horses from paddocks with dams, drains, septic outlets, or mud.
- If conditions are wet, consider moving your horse or soaking the affected foot in strong salt water to dry it out and keep your horse in a dry stable or shed for at least 12 hours a day. When turning out into damp paddocks you can apply, then wrap and boot the foot to keep it as dry as possible.
- In cold weather Hoof Paste Black can be quite stiff, warm in hands before applying to soften a little.
Reminder: Hoof tissue that has previously been affected by pathologies such as seedy toe may have scarring; this weakens the area making it more prone to future occurrence. Hoof paste Black can be used as a protective barrier.
Regularly check resected areas by running a hoof pick around edges, removing soft, crumbly or powdery tissue. This is a sign of recurrence or missed areas.
Example Application:
Day 1: Resect the hoof wall back to healthy hoof tissue.
Day 1-3: Scrub area with hydrogen peroxide, rinse with 50/50 methylated spirits and water. Keep affected areas open to the air and keep the horse in a dry environment. Smear on Hoof Paste Black as a protective barrier.
Day 4-7: Flush area with 50/50 methylated spirits and water, towel dry and smear on Hoof Paste Black.
Day 7- onwards: every 2-4 days clean and reapply Hoof Paste Black as needed to keep the area covered until the cavity grows out.
