Maximizing Fit with Hoof Boots

Maximizing Fit with Hoof Boots

Accurate measurements are essential for a proper boot fit, especially for styles like the Easy boot Glove that require precision. Always measure in millimetres, not inches, as rounding inch measurements can lead to significant sizing errors.

Measurement Guidelines:

  1. Measure each hoof after a fresh trim.
  2. Measure length from the toe to the buttress line (or back of heel platform) in mm—do not include heel bulbs.
  3. Measure width at the widest point in millimetres.
  4. View chart for your chosen boot. Ensure both length and width fall within the same size range on a chart. If they differ by more than one size, consider a different boot style or check for flares in the quarters.
  5. Be sure to refer to the manufacturer’s sizing chart for each boot style as sizes can differ between brand and model.
  6. If unsure, consult our staff or hire a Fit Kit for styles like the Glove, Glue-On Shell, or Back Country.

Fit Tips:

  • Read the manufacturer’s information for that individual boot style and see if it suits your purposes. Be sure to do this as there are many styles, all slightly different.
  • Use comfort pads (6 mm or 12 mm) if the boot feels slightly loose.
  • For horses recently out of shoes, start with a looser-fitting boot and transition to snug styles as natural hoof shape presents itself.
  • Choose boots that match your horse’s hoof shape to prevent twisting or movement. Horses measuring wider than longer are hard to fit as boots can turn around.
  • For therapy or soaking boots, upsize to allow for thick pads, bandaging and easier application.
  • Some styles can accommodate hoof distortions or club feet with adjustable fastening systems. Eg Old Macs and Epics.
  • Hoof flares, cracks, and distortions can be signs of infrequent or incorrect trimming style. Consult our Equine Podiotherapist for guidance.
  • Boot sizes do not correspond to shoe sizes and boot sizing is not universal.
  • A 4-week trim cycle maximum is best for close fitting boots.

Note:  If you are thinking of purchasing either a Easyboot Glove, Glue on shell or Back country then a fit kit should be hired prior to purchase.  Refer to the boot shop to hire a FIT KIT.  Using the sizing chart alone for these particular styles will NOT be enough to find a suitable fit for your horse.
